Saparmurat Niyazov, Turkmen Leader, Dies at 66

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (AP) -- Saparmurat Niyazov, the authoritarian president of energy-rich Turkmenistan who created an elaborate personality cult during more than two decades at the helm of the former Soviet republic, died Thursday, officials said. He was 66.

State television showed Niyazov's portrait in a black frame, and a news presenter was reading a list of his accomplishments and merits. A spokesman for the Turkmen Embassy in Moscow confirmed the report [READ MORE].

This is of particular interest to me because my good friend Mike is currently in Turkmenistan working for the Peace Corps. They are unsure how this will affect their goals and whether or not they will continue their work there, but for now he is safe and everything is fine. Regardless, please keep all of those over there working to help better educate Turkmenistan children in your thoughts.
