New Idea Society is a band that was originally formed in Boston by Mike Law of Euclid and Stephen Brodsky of Cave In. Now residents of New York City, New Idea Society's music ranges from solid rock style songs with edgy guitar riffs to up-beat indie rock acoustic pieces. One of the band's strong suits is a knack for blending bright, catchy melodies with dark themes and brooding lyrics. A key feature of the band's early releases is Law and Brodsky's use of simplistic recording techniques, relying on their instruments to produce the desired sounds rather than using external compressors or outboard gear. New Idea Society recorded their first two releases, "Questionnaire EP" and You Are Awake Or Asleep in their homemade studio.
New Idea Society is the latest release on the Washington D.C-based label, Exotic Fever, run by Katy Otto. The label is known for putting out some really great independent bands, ranging from melodic girl fronted post punk to pretty aggressive D.C.-style rock. The ladies that run Exotic Fever are also extremely active in their community and supporting women's rights and cultural work that is being done locally. Being based in the Nation's Capital allows the label to combine music with activism and leadership. Exotic Fever has released compilation CDs that have benefited DC Books to Prisons, Vietnam Veterans of America Benefits Program, the Empowerment Program and H.I.P.S. [Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive].
