The eighth Siren Music Festival, the annual free indie-rock extravaganza at Coney Island, was a sunny day at the beach full of ringing rock guitars and forecasts of doom: for romances, for lives, for nations, for mankind and, closer to home, for Siren in its current form.
It would have been impossible for the Siren festival, presented Saturday by The Village Voice, to encompass indie rock with only 14 bands — even more difficult this year, perhaps, because it was competing for bookings with the three-day indie-rock Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago the same weekend. (One Siren band, Times New Viking, was scheduled for Pitchfork on Sunday.) The Siren lineup progressed from irritants to melodists, starting with noisy New York City bands — Dragons of Zynth, These Are Powers — and winding up with the slyly meandering songs of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and the grand crescendos of Broken Social Scene, in simultaneous headlining sets...
